The Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Bulgaria (IDES) - General Assembly

For the first time, the International Congress Center Burgas (ICCB) is hosting the General Assembly of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Bulgaria (IDES). The event is held annually in connection with the professional holiday of auditors – April 17, and all members of the professional organization are traditionally invited to attend.

The Institute of Certified Public Accountants (IDES) is the only national professional organization for all certified public accountants (CPAs) in Bulgaria. The qualification “Certified Public Accountant” is recognized in the country as one of the most prestigious professional business credentials. According to Bulgarian law, all CPAs are eligible for membership in the Institute upon obtaining their certification.

Auditing serves the business community by enhancing financial transparency and supporting the overall development of the business environment. For small enterprises in particular, auditors often represent the primary and sometimes the only form of financial control in Bulgaria. Certified accountants frequently act as consultants on matters of business development, taxation, management, IT systems, internal auditing, and more.

Auditing is among the most strictly regulated professions in Bulgaria. Both registered auditors and IDES are subject to public oversight by the Commission for Public Oversight of Statutory Auditors (CPOSA).

Bulgaria is one of the first European countries to implement independent financial auditing. The profession was established back in 1931 with the founding of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, created by law published in the State Gazette No. 11 of April 17, 1931, and remained active until 1948.

The profession was reinstated in 1991 with the establishment of the Association of Certified Public Accountants in Bulgaria. In 1996, amendments to the Accounting Act led to the formation of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants (IDES) as an independent national professional organization.

IDES inherited the responsibilities of the Association and its membership in the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), which dates back to 1995. The Institute became a member of the Federation of Mediterranean Certified Accountants (FCM) in 2003 and a full member of Accountancy Europe in 2006.
